Detoxification Services in San Francisco County

The following list of programs provide Detoxification for no or low-cost. This list appears in alphabetical order and is subject to change at any time. Prerequisites for admission, prices, descriptions and incidentals are also subject to change. NCADA-BA will update the list as needed but will update it at least annually.

A program’s appearance on this list does not constitute an endorsement from NCADA-BA.

Definitions about the different types of Detox available:

SOCIAL MODEL DETOX

Do not provide medication for withdrawal but provide a supportive atmosphere for individuals detoxing from Drugs and Alcohol

Medical Detox

Are Hospital-based and provide medication to lesson the symptoms of withdrawal.  Usually require payment or insurance.

Methadone Detox and Maintenance

For persons dependent on opiates a detox is usually for a 30 day period using a medication called methadone. Maintenance is longer period where the person is taking methadone and receiving counseling.

** Individuals from counties outside San Francisco who cannot afford to pay for detox need to go to programs in the county where they reside.

--Walden House does not offer Methadone Maintenance but it will accept patients who are using methadone to detox and provide transportation to the methadone centers.

--This is an option for those who want both in- patient and methadone.

--Intensive OUTPATIENT program (daily program for 6 months to one year), day treatment.

--1 year RESIDENTIAL program

--90 day support after care program

The Drop-In Center (415) 864-0296

Serves approximately 30,000 people each year. This component provides a sober and supportive environment for the alcohol and drug user who has decided to begin or continue recovery. The Center has money management services currently working with 60 clients.
